Prices at camp sites in Euro host cities: 20-35 euros

In all Euro-2012 host cities in Ukraine work has begun to started work on the organization of affordable temporary housing, where fans will stay during the tournament. This is what representatives of the host cities said in comments to the Information Centre Ukraine-2012.

Accommodation prices in all cities will be roughly in the same category. For example, in Kyiv a shared place in the Swedish camp site on Trukhaniv island starts from 20 euros per person per night.

“As to more affordable housing, we support the proposal of the tourism company Hamaliya, which is offering a package deal for a stay in Kyiv for two people for three days for 215-250 euros. Such offers in Kyiv are, in our opinion, reasonable in price and quality”, said Vyacheslav Mironenko, director of the municipal enterprise Kyiv city tourist information centre.
The prices in Lviv, depending on the location of the tent city, amenities and availability range from 30 to 100 euros, and 35 to 80 euros in Kyiv. Prices are no different for Donetsk – from 30 euros per bed per night.
A reminder that host city Kyiv is preparing to place Swedish team fans at Trukhaniv island in the capital. Some 6,000 Swedes are looking to say on the island and there are predictions that the figure will grow to 15,000-16,000 by the beginning of the tournament.

And in Lviv a decision has been taken where to locate a fan camp site for Danish fans during Euro-2012. Under an agreement between Lviv City Council and the Football Federation of Denmark, the Bukhta Vikinhiv hotel complex (Lviv) have signed a deal on placing a Danish fan camp on the territory of the complex. Some 500 places have already been booked at the camp site. According to the Danish Football Federation 750 people will live at Bukhta Vikinhiv. The complex can accommodate up to 3,000 people.

Swedish fans will be accommodated in tents on Trukhaniv Island

The Swedish fan association has made an agreement with Kyiv local authorities to locate their fan-town on Trukhaniv Island. Under previous arrangements, the camp will be able to accommodate 10,000 fans. This is reported by the website of the CampSweden.se fan association. The Swedes describe the place with enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of accommodation near the centre and proximity to water. However, the fan association is actually happy of fact that they could solve the problem of accommodating their fans in a democratic fan camp. A reminder that the national team of Sweden will play three groups matches of EURO 2012 in the capital of Ukraine.

“The location is ideal for us. Near a sandy beach there is also a large green area. At the same time, the camp is located only in 3.5 km from the Olympic National Sports Complex, where the EURO matches will take place. Some 400 metres from the camp there is a footbridge over the river in the direction of the city centre, and 500 meters – the FC Dynamo facility, where our team will hold open workouts. We are satisfied with everything”, Ingo Shoederlund from the CampSweden association explained.

He said that the number of places in the tents currently stands at 6,486. “Given the fact that at the end of 2011 we received over 7,000 requests, we intend to increase capacity to 10,000″, he added.

The price for accommodation also suits Swedish fans – 129-189 SEK (approximately 150 – 200 UAH per place a day). The town will be equipped with 50 toilets, 160 showers, a cafe with Swedish food and a small security post. “We will have higher standards than at typical music festivals in Sweden”, Ingo Shoederlund assured.

Ukraine ‘Death Match’ film hits nerve before Euro 2012

Ukraine ‘Death Match’ film hits nerve before Euro 2012

A Russian film released on the eve of Ukraine’s hosting of Euro 2012 tells the stirring story of the notorious “Match of Death” played between Soviet footballers and Nazi occupiers in Kiev during World War II.

But the film has reopened still raw wounds in Ukraine and has been accused of anti-Ukrainian bias for its depiction of some locals willingly collaborating with the invading German forces.

The film, “Match,” is set in the occupied Ukrainian capital in 1941 and 1942. It is based on the true story of a team of Soviet footballers who played a series of matches against the Nazis 70 years ago. It shows the Soviet players irking the occupiers with victory after victory. The Nazis then arrange a showpiece game in a swastika-covered stadium to prove their superiority.

Under pressure to lose for propaganda purposes, the Soviet side, called Start, refuses to throw the match and wins it, knowing it will lead to their deaths.

— “I can’t decide for everyone, but my vote is for victory,” says the goalkeeper hero, Nikolai Ranevich, in the dressing room at half-time.
— “But they’ll kill us,” objects a teammate.
— “That’s a minus, but we’ll get over it,” he says deadpan.

Shortly after the match, later dubbed the “Match of Death,” the Nazis arrested winning team members and sent them to a concentration camp where a number of them were shot. The sweeping patriotic drama went on release in Russia and Ukraine on May 1, in time for Victory Day celebrations on May 9 and Ukraine’s controversial hosting of the Euro 2012 football championship in June. The film was 70 percent financed by a Kremlin fund set up to promote patriotic cinema and stars one of the country’s most popular actors, Sergei Bezrukov, as Ranevich. Its posters in Russia include a message wishing the national side good luck in the Euro 2012 competition. “We should show this film to our football team,” Bezrukov told journalists after training for the role with former Russia goalkeeper Sergei Ovchninnikov. But it has angered some Ukrainians with its unflattering depiction of local collaborators enthusiastically welcoming the Nazis and carrying out their orders. “Let them do the shooting!” a Nazi commander orders local police wearing armbands in the yellow-and-blue colours of the Ukrainian national flag. And flower-garlanded women hand the traditional welcome of bread and salt to Nazi troops as the new city mayor hangs up a portrait of Hitler. After delays and protests by nationalist groups, Ukraine’s cinema agency finally allowed the release of the film for viewers over 18. The film’s dramatic version of events is also matter of debate, with some historians agreeing that the players were not necessarily pressured to fix the match and were later shot for different reasons. Indeed a German probe that closed in 2005 concluded there was no evidence the men were shot because of their playing the match, a fact mentioned in the film’s final titles with a heavy dose of irony. “It all happened,” said producer Dmitry Kulikov, a history graduate, at a press screening. “There is no legend. These are facts. And yes — there are different interpretations.” The film ends with a dark screen and a brief subtitle that the men only enjoyed “seven happy days” after their victory. One player died under interrogation. The others were taken to the Syrets Nazi concentration camp outside Kiev. Three were shot including goalkeeper Mykola Trusevich, the prototype of Bezrukov’s hero. Five others survived. Kulikov said the film deliberately did not show what happened to the players, instead focusing on their choice to beat the Nazi side at all costs — which he is convinced was a heroic one. “Actually this is the main event — not how they (the Nazis) later took revenge on them. Of course they had a choice,” he insisted. The powerful story featured in a 1962 Soviet film called “Third Time.” It also famously inspired the 1981 US film “Escape to Victory” which starred Sylvester Stallone in the goalkeeper role and moved the action to a German camp for Allied prisoners of war. The film has had mediocre reviews in Russia, however, with critics accusing it of trivialising events. The film “uses the most primitive emotional cliches,” wrote the Kommersant business daily. “The historical plot is very strong and serious … but ‘Match’ is just another pot-boiler with white-teethed and well-groomed media-friendly actors, dressed up in overly glamorous outfits,” wrote Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

GOLDEN GATE

 GOLDEN GATE

Golden Gate is a unique fortification architecture monument that survived until nowadays. It was constructed in 1017-1024 and served as a main gala entrance to Kiev. The great tower with Annunciation Church delighted contemporaries and terrified enemies, die to its inaccessibility. The name of the Gate in Kiev reminds of famous entrance to Constantinople: Kiev prince Yaroslav Mudry wanted to underline that his country was as powerful as Byzantine Empire.
Yaroslav Mudry paid much attention to Kiev enlargement, consolidation and fortification. During the time of his rule the territory of the city became 10 times larger than it had used to be. Yaroslav was the one who destroyed hordes of nomads Pechenegs who regularly attacked Kiev. On the site where Yaroslav’s troops won the final victory over the nomads the prince ordered to found the fortification tower that was named Golden Gate. The legend says that before the final battle with powerful Pechenegs Yaroslav Mudry prayed and begged the Virgin to help him to defeat the enemy. He promised to build the church dedicated to the Mother of God in case of success. He did not forget his promise and ordered to top Golden Gate with gilded-domed Annunciation Church. Until 1699 Golden Gate was decorated with the image of Our Lady of Kazan.

Kievers called Golden Gate “the sky gate”, as every morning the sun passed through it, rose and entered “the vault of heaven”. It was a splendid view, and the citizens of Kiev believed that sun and Golden Gate saved the city from darkness and death. The fortification construction of Golden Gate was totally inaccessible: nomadic tribes could never take it by assault, and even Baty-khan didn’t manage to enter the city through the Gate. He stormed a less fortified city entrance and destroyed Golden Gate from inside.
In the 16th-17th centuries Golden Gate was in poor condition, but it was still used as a gala entrance to Kiev until the middle of the 18th century. Golden Gate witnessed many important historical events. In 1648 Kievers greeted the hero of the Ukrainian national liberation struggle Bogdan Khmelnitsky after his victory on Yellow Waters. In 1654, the year of reunion of Russia and Ukraine, Russian ambassadors solemnly passed through Golden Gate. In the middle of the 18th century the ruins of Golden Gate were covered up with earth.
The second birth of Golden Gate occurred in 1832, when archeologists discovered the ruins of old fortification construction. They were restored and fenced with metal iron. Kievers and guests of the city could admire the symbol of Russia’s power. In 1970 it was decided to construct a pavilion that would protect the ruins and recreate the original look of Golden Gate. The museum exposition presents items related to the history of old Kiev, including weapons, everyday life objects and other exhibits that were found in the course of archeological excavations in the area of Golden Gate. It was discovered that the floor and the walls of old Annunciation church were covered with frescos and mosaics. It was the very church that was put up in honor of the Virgin as the gratitude for the victory over the Pechenegs, so the little pieces of smalt and plaster that were found are especially precious. The restored church was also decorated with mosaics and frescos.
The reconstructed pavilion of Golden Gate was opened in May 1982, when the country celebrated the 1,500th anniversary of Kiev.

Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art

Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art

Kiev, Kiev tour, travel to Kiev, tourist travel guide, city guideThe Museum of Art named after Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko was founded in 1919 on the basis of their private museum. The museum is also called the Museum of Western and Oriental Art. Now it keeps one of the best collections of foreign art in Ukraine. Kiev, Kiev tour, travel to Kiev, tourist travel guide, city guideFrom 1919 the number of exhibits has been more than 13 times increased – from 1,250 to nearly 17,000 artworks, with 2,000 pieces exposed in museum halls. Visitors can view many remarkable samples of foreign art: Ancient Greek, Roman, Italian, French, Spanish, Flemish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Egyptian, etc. Famous founders of museum’s collections Bogdan Khanenko and his wife Varvara always dream to open the public museum of art in Kiev, while collecting works of famous artists and sculptors. Finally their dreams came true. In 1999 the museum they have created celebrated its 80th anniversary. The collection of the museum consists of 25 thousands of exhibits and is considered to be the biggest Kiev, Kiev tour, travel to Kiev, tourist travel guide, city guideforeign art collection in Ukraine. Among the museum’s collection there are real fine art masterpieces. There is, for example, the world-famous work of Diego Velasquez, The Portrait of Infanta Margaret, located in the Spanish hall of the museum. The famous portrait appeared in Kiev after Bogdan Khanenko had purchased it in Berlin on the sale of Hamburg council Weber’s collections. The presentation of the painting in Kiev was arranged very mysteriously. Khanenko hasn’t informed the guests of the banquet about the real reasons. When the curtain was taken away from the Velasquez’ masterpiece, the audience was really impressed. The picture Kiev, Kiev tour, travel to Kiev, tourist travel guide, city guidecreated a real furore in cultural life of Kiev at that time. Khanenko’s cultural heritage is the core of the museum’s collection. The breadth of collectors’ range of interest is impressive. There are Egyptian statues and bronze sculptures, antic terracotta and glassware, Roman and Greek sculptures, Byzantine exhibits, ivory, church stained-glass, icons, fabrics, jewelry of Kievan Russia. With time the collection enriched and formed, thanks to the efforts of many famous people. The famous patron of art from Saint Petersburg, V. Shavinskiy, donated about 200 priceless masterpieces of Flemish, Netherlands and Dutch painting schools. The museum’s stock was enriched with unique Chinese paintings of the 16th-20th centuries. Taisia Jasparre, native Ukrainian wife of French ambassador in Peking Andre Stephen Jasparre, presented 400 scrolls of paintings to the museum. Every item of the museum’s collection has its interesting history. The appearance of valuable Juan de Zurbaran’s still-life painting is the whole story. Once famous stud-owner from Moscow Malyutin decided to get rid of old things left from the previous owner on the attic of his new house. Moscow millionaire was not interested in the stuff kept there but also hasn’t allowed Khanenko to research it. He was forcing Khanenko to buy all the stuff at once. Khanenko have decided to take a risk. The result was not a loose. Among these things there was the valuable masterpiece of famous Spanish painter, a fantastic boon for an art collector and also some of excellent paintings of Dutch masters. The building of museum was constructed under the project of famous architect from Saint Petersburg F. Meltzer in the 80s of the 19th century. Kiev, Kiev tour, travel to Kiev, tourist travel guide, city guideThen it was reconstructed and decorated several times according to plans of Khanenko family. Being the famous specialist in the history of Kiev V. Kovalinsky once said “this building was the shell and the architectural addition to the great art collections of Khanenko family.” Although the collection covers a wide range of countries, it does not claim to complete representation of periods and styles of the foreign art and creative manners of foreign artist. It is not the number of art pieces, but unique nature of many of them that makes Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art famous not only in Ukraine but far abroad as well.

Welcome to one of Kiev’s mega entertainment complexes. Maximum is a veteran in Kiev, having operated for a number of years with much success, largely due to their loyal client base of students and young professionals, drawing consistent crowds with its wide array of activity offers. One can visit a Disco, Bowl, see a Striptease, play some billiards, gamble the night away, or just enjoy a fine meal by the fireplace. With all of these activities readily available in one building, why wouldn’t this place be so popular? The disco is a standard bar, dance floor and laser lights with the only caveat being occasional strip shows and various theme parties.

The strip club is not the best by Kiev’s standards but is easily accessed through a wide door from the regular disco floor. If you get tired of dancing you can easily slip away for a nice striptease from a pretty Kiev student. The casino is a standard middle of the road gamble offering a wide variety of table and machine games. Billiards room is large, and offers mostly Russian style tables with one American sized table as of last visit. The restaurant offers reasonable prices but closes early, therefore depriving you the satisfaction of getting a meal at 5 am before heading home. Maximum draws different crowds on different nights, yet well known for catering to the under-served student scene. Few of Kiev’s universities in the nearby proximity make it convenient.

 Verdict:
Maximum one stop shop approach has been a success for many years and you can still get lots of mileage out of this place if you come on the right night.

Kiev needs more hotspots like Kaif. Even though the clientele appears funky to some, we can’t get enough of this fairly small yet original club. Some of the ‘bad’ elements usually found on the Kiev’s nightlife circuit are surprisingly absent at Kaif, yet the music is some of the best. DJ resident as of this writing was DJ Kon, spinning some of the best Euro house Kiev has to offer. Bottle Service is available and Kaif is overall not a cheap place. Instead of the typical tacky in your face decor that so many Kiev nightclubs use, Kaif uses subtle, amber lighting to accent the understated retro looked, and it works. A little smaller than tennis court, Kaif has room for dancing with an official dance floor, with VIP sofas dotting the walls. Some of Kiev’s golden youth loves calling this place its home on Fridays and Saturdays. Just to be safe, come dressed with a flavor to assure the goons at the door don’t give you a hard time. Once you’re inside, be prepared to put on your disco shoes and dance the night away!

Verdict:
Kiev truly needs more clubs like Kaif. Good service and clientele assure a great time for anyone who loves electronic music.
