GOLDEN GATE

 GOLDEN GATE

Golden Gate is a unique fortification architecture monument that survived until nowadays. It was constructed in 1017-1024 and served as a main gala entrance to Kiev. The great tower with Annunciation Church delighted contemporaries and terrified enemies, die to its inaccessibility. The name of the Gate in Kiev reminds of famous entrance to Constantinople: Kiev prince Yaroslav Mudry wanted to underline that his country was as powerful as Byzantine Empire.
Yaroslav Mudry paid much attention to Kiev enlargement, consolidation and fortification. During the time of his rule the territory of the city became 10 times larger than it had used to be. Yaroslav was the one who destroyed hordes of nomads Pechenegs who regularly attacked Kiev. On the site where Yaroslav’s troops won the final victory over the nomads the prince ordered to found the fortification tower that was named Golden Gate. The legend says that before the final battle with powerful Pechenegs Yaroslav Mudry prayed and begged the Virgin to help him to defeat the enemy. He promised to build the church dedicated to the Mother of God in case of success. He did not forget his promise and ordered to top Golden Gate with gilded-domed Annunciation Church. Until 1699 Golden Gate was decorated with the image of Our Lady of Kazan.

Kievers called Golden Gate “the sky gate”, as every morning the sun passed through it, rose and entered “the vault of heaven”. It was a splendid view, and the citizens of Kiev believed that sun and Golden Gate saved the city from darkness and death. The fortification construction of Golden Gate was totally inaccessible: nomadic tribes could never take it by assault, and even Baty-khan didn’t manage to enter the city through the Gate. He stormed a less fortified city entrance and destroyed Golden Gate from inside.
In the 16th-17th centuries Golden Gate was in poor condition, but it was still used as a gala entrance to Kiev until the middle of the 18th century. Golden Gate witnessed many important historical events. In 1648 Kievers greeted the hero of the Ukrainian national liberation struggle Bogdan Khmelnitsky after his victory on Yellow Waters. In 1654, the year of reunion of Russia and Ukraine, Russian ambassadors solemnly passed through Golden Gate. In the middle of the 18th century the ruins of Golden Gate were covered up with earth.
The second birth of Golden Gate occurred in 1832, when archeologists discovered the ruins of old fortification construction. They were restored and fenced with metal iron. Kievers and guests of the city could admire the symbol of Russia’s power. In 1970 it was decided to construct a pavilion that would protect the ruins and recreate the original look of Golden Gate. The museum exposition presents items related to the history of old Kiev, including weapons, everyday life objects and other exhibits that were found in the course of archeological excavations in the area of Golden Gate. It was discovered that the floor and the walls of old Annunciation church were covered with frescos and mosaics. It was the very church that was put up in honor of the Virgin as the gratitude for the victory over the Pechenegs, so the little pieces of smalt and plaster that were found are especially precious. The restored church was also decorated with mosaics and frescos.
The reconstructed pavilion of Golden Gate was opened in May 1982, when the country celebrated the 1,500th anniversary of Kiev.

Admission: $4

The Scene

Welcome to one of Kiev’s mega entertainment complexes. Maximum is a veteran in Kiev, having operated for a number of years with much success, largely due to their loyal client base of students and young professionals, drawing consistent crowds with its wide array of activity offers. One can visit a Disco, Bowl, see a Striptease, play some billiards, gamble the night away, or just enjoy a fine meal by the fireplace. With all of these activities readily available in one building, why wouldn’t this place be so popular? The disco is a standard bar, dance floor and laser lights with the only caveat being occasional strip shows and various theme parties.

The strip club is not the best by Kiev’s standards but is easily accessed through a wide door from the regular disco floor. If you get tired of dancing you can easily slip away for a nice striptease from a pretty Kiev student. The casino is a standard middle of the road gamble offering a wide variety of table and machine games. Billiards room is large, and offers mostly Russian style tables with one American sized table as of last visit. The restaurant offers reasonable prices but closes early, therefore depriving you the satisfaction of getting a meal at 5 am before heading home. Maximum draws different crowds on different nights, yet well known for catering to the under-served student scene. Few of Kiev’s universities in the nearby proximity make it convenient.

 Verdict:
Maximum one stop shop approach has been a success for many years and you can still get lots of mileage out of this place if you come on the right night.

Kiev needs more hotspots like Kaif. Even though the clientele appears funky to some, we can’t get enough of this fairly small yet original club. Some of the ‘bad’ elements usually found on the Kiev’s nightlife circuit are surprisingly absent at Kaif, yet the music is some of the best. DJ resident as of this writing was DJ Kon, spinning some of the best Euro house Kiev has to offer. Bottle Service is available and Kaif is overall not a cheap place. Instead of the typical tacky in your face decor that so many Kiev nightclubs use, Kaif uses subtle, amber lighting to accent the understated retro looked, and it works. A little smaller than tennis court, Kaif has room for dancing with an official dance floor, with VIP sofas dotting the walls. Some of Kiev’s golden youth loves calling this place its home on Fridays and Saturdays. Just to be safe, come dressed with a flavor to assure the goons at the door don’t give you a hard time. Once you’re inside, be prepared to put on your disco shoes and dance the night away!

Verdict:
Kiev truly needs more clubs like Kaif. Good service and clientele assure a great time for anyone who loves electronic music.

Dreams come true

Each person wants that his or her dreams come true. Kiev – is an ancient city with great history, culture and positive energy.

It was, is  and will be the city of inspiration. Lots of  writers, artists and  musicians could create their masterpieces  after attendance  Kiev.

There are 5 famous places in Kiev where your dreams come true:

1) Andriyivsky Uzviz, the monument of Pronia Prokopovna and Golohvastov. For making your wish you should touch the beetle on the men’s back. In a movie  “After two rabbits”  – rich, but not attractive resident of  Kiev – Pronia Prokopovna was falling in love with poor, but handsome hair-master Golohvastov, who gave himself away as rich and famous designer and promised to get married to Pronia Prokopovna.

But Golohvastov did not love Pronia, he loved her money.

And right before the wedding ceremony his unfair plan was exposed.

The monument of Pronia Prokopovna and Golohvastov is a symbol of nice attentions between man and woman, but there is a beetle on the back of Golohvastov that points insincere  attention out You can make your wish to rub the beetle.

2) Independence Square, the monument of Ukraine Independence. You come to the center of the square, look up and  make a wish. Ukraine became the independence country in August  24, 1991.It is a significant date for Ukrainian people. The monument  of Independence was set  in 2001 in honor of the 10-th anniversary of independence.

3) Independence Square, Liadski Gates.

You should come through the gates and make a wish. During the period of Kiev Rus there were 3 gates through which people could get to the city, and Liadski Vorota was one of them.

4) Mykhalivski Cathedral,  Bell Tower.

You  can make a wish during the sound the bells. All we know that sounds of bell are magical sounds and they are symbols of victory, happy and success. On the territory of  the beautiful cathedral you can make a wish and be sure that your dream will come true.

5) Mykhalivski Cathedral, the fountain. You stick the coin and make your wish. The fountain is situated on the territory of Mikhailovsky Cathedral, from the funicular side. You stick the coin and make a wish, if the coin was sticked you are sure that your cherished dream will come true!!! Believe, these places are wonderful and have a power history.

The Ukrainian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life

Can you see all of Ukraine specialities during one day?

And even more than that – to travel in time by a couple of centuries ago? Yes you can, if you visit Pirohovo! Less than an hour drive from the centre of Kiev – and you find yourself in the middle of a village lost in a forest and get a colorful holiday! Let me explain: Pirohovo (Pirohiv) is a museum of architecture under the open air.

Pirohovo  is an architecture and landscape museum under open air. It includes all main examples of historic and ethnographic regions of Ukraine of ХVI – ХХ centuries. The museum was founded in Pirogovo village in the outskirts of Kyiv in 1969. Iis area is over 150 hectare, which conveniently accommodate over three hundred pieces of architecture. First visitors attended the museum in 1976. For more than 30 years this place is attracting visitors in summer, winter and other seasons. During summer holidays and weekends it appears to gather more people than famous Khreshatyk street. Choose at your taste, when you like to walk down the Pirohovo  lanes. On «attendance» days the hills are covered by resting visitors who are having shashlyk (grilled meat), restaurants – are filled by lovers of home-like-food, and you can enter houses-museums, mills, churches and have a horse ride. If you are romantic – in local wooden churches (acting!) you can organize wedding. Nice choice! On the market days on the central place in  Pirohovo  you can meet people in folk garments. You can choose for yourself hand-made shirts, and in addition – hats, bags, straw-shews, cushions, carpets, etc. You can also attend master-classes on pottery and other crafts: And all of this is surrounded by sounds of Ukrainian native music! Those devoted to calm walking and privacy will choose to visit Pirohovo on weekdays, in order to avoid long lines to purchase entry tickets. It’s also a good idea to come here in Winter or Spring, to really feel yourself a resident of Ukrainian countryside. You can choose a region at your taste: Transcarpatia, Poltava and Slobozhanshchina, Podil, Polessie, or Southern Ukraine. The nature will support the exhibition – hills are covered with Ukrainian ‘hatas’ (houses), clouds pouring over your head, ‘troyka’ of horses is running past a wooden church with a bell, black silhouettes of mills against sunset – all this is worth an artists brush and will sure satisfy a dreamer.

Pirohovo welcomes you! 🙂

Format of the journey: weekend trip.

Season of the year: any.

National museum of folk architecture and crafts of Ukraine is working without holidays. Open hours: 10:00 to 17:00. (at 17.00 the houses close for visitors, but you can walk on the territory until late).

Practical things:
There is a parking lot at the entrance as well as a small convenience store where you can buy water, drinks and some snacks. There is no smoking in the area. On national holidays there is usually a special program.

Map of the Pirohovo museum:

Symbols on the map:

1. Naddnepryanschina

2. Poltavschina

3. Marshy woodlands (Polesie)

4. Podil

5. Carpathians

6. South of Ukraine

7. Folk crafts

How to drive there
To drive to Pirogovo head down Krasnoarmyiska, at the end turn right to Druzhby Narodov, pass Moskovska ploshad and follow signs to Zhytomir & Odessa. Pass Holosiivskyi Park (Exhibition center) and continue straight until you reach the Ring Road (Okruzhnaya). Exit under the bridge to get on Okruzhnaya, once there follow signs to Kharkov. When the road narrows, the division between the lanes disappears and you see green hills in front of you, watch for a violet gas station. When you pass that, take the first U-Turn, go back about 300 meters and take first right – there you will see a sign in Russian saying ‘Muzey’.

Or use Marshrutka 156 from metro Lybydskaya.

Also we can help to organize your trip to Pirogovo.

Your private professional guide will help you to feel the atmosphere of the Pirogovo , discover its most exciting places. This trip might become one of the best and most unforgettable events for you and in order not to be frustrated.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra

The Kiev Pechersk Lavra Monastery is a complex that is made up from various fascinating buildings and sights. These diverse memories of the past all carry the strong architectural signature of the Ukrainian Baroque construction style and form a network of beautiful and spectacular structures. The monastery and surrounding complex is also known as the Calvin Cave Monastery.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

During its earlier years, the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Monastery suffered many incidents of vandalism, damage and destruction, but managed to survive for us to marvel at. The monastery was originally founded by two monks, namely St. Anthony of the Caves (Antoniy) and St. Theodosius of the Caves (Feodosiy), in 1051. The Kiev Pechersk Lavra Monastery was given the alternative name of Calvin Cave Monastery, as the monastery was constructed over a network of caves that was excavated by the monks. Most of the buildings that are seen here date back from the 11th century.

Amongst the structures is the Troyitska Nadbramma Church, also known as the Holy Trinity Church. It was constructed during the years 1106 to 1108 and is the main monastery church, decorated in breathtaking murals and paintings. In 1941, the Upsensky Cathedral, or Dormition Cathedral, was destroyed. The Holy Trinity Church then took the role of main church. The ruins of this once spectacular church can still be seen today, and it is a great shame that this structure, which was originally constructed between the years 1073 to 1078, is lost to us forever. Buildings that were added to the complex in later years include the Great Bell Tower that was erected during the years 1731 to 1744; a 96-meter structure that is home to a library; a massive clock; and it still has three of its original bells on display. The 17th century St. Nicolas Church, the 1679 Conception of St. Anne Church and the All Saints’ Church, which was built in 1696 to 1698, are all beautiful architectural masterpieces.

The Near Caves and Far Caves should also be visited as they exhibit hundreds of archaeological artifacts and items that are in wonderfully preserved condition, and there are many historical facts and stories to the complex. This amazing attraction in Ukraine will keep visitors fascinated and spellbound for hours. The Kiev Pechersk Lavra is an amazing collection of beautiful buildings and works of art that cannot be seen or experienced anywhere, but in Ukraine.

PLAN:

1) The Great Lavra Bell Tower, the eighteenth century.
2) Holy Assumption Cathedral, XI-XX century.
3) All Saints Church, the eighteenth century.
4) Church of Our Saviour on Berestove XII-XVII century.
5) Refectory of the church, the nineteenth century.
6) Holy Cross Church, the seventeenth century. Entrance to the Caves.
7) Annozachatievskaya Church, XVII Century. Log in distant caves.
8) Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, the seventeenth century.
